A Chance to Provide Books for Women in Prison

UPDATE: THE JUNE 15TH BOOK DRIVE WAS SO SUCCESSFUL THAT ORGANIZERS ARE POSTPONING THE 2ND DRIVE.

Please monitor the event’s Facebook page for updates.

Imagine being on that proverbial desert island… with all the time in the world… and you’ve only got one book. For women in the Shelby County Corrections Center, it probably feels like that sometimes.

According to this article in the Memphis Flyer, aside from a handful of books brought in by volunteers, the only book available is several copies of The Shack.

That’s why two Memphians are working to create a library for the women’s prison. But they can only do it with a community book drive. You can join the effort and get updates on the project by clicking this Facebook event page.

Or just drop off gently used paperback books* at two separate book drives:

Saturday, June 15th from 9 – 5pm at Theatre Memphis

Saturday, June 29th from 9 – 5pm in the parking lot of Playhouse on the Square (To Be Rescheduled)

*Only paperback books can be accepted.

  1. That is a great suggestion. We will ask the organizers!  — Sent from Mailbox for iPhone

  2. Thank you for letting us know this is, in fact, something that is needed. Any suggestions on topics or titles that would be most interesting? — Sent from Mailbox for iPhone
