The criminal justice system strips people of their names, their stories, and their identities. It reduces human beings to case numbers and charge sheets. The Humanity Project pushes back against that — through art, writing, photography, and community storytelling.
What It Is
The Humanity Project is SCPD’s arts and community engagement initiative. It began during 2020 at the height of COVID-19 as an effort to humanize our clients in the eyes of the public, the press, and the courts — to make visible the full person behind every case. We aim to see it grow into a community of clients, staff, artists, and advocates who believe that storytelling is itself a form of justice.
How to Participate
The Humanity Project is open to current and former SCPD clients who want to share their stories, as well as community artists, writers, and advocates who want to support the work. Participation is always voluntary.
If you’re interested in participating — as a client, an artist, or a community partner — email us at publicdefender@shelbycountytn.gov.
About consent and privacy
All participation in The Humanity Project is voluntary and requires written consent. Client privacy is protected at every stage. We never share identifying information without explicit permission, and participants may withdraw consent at any time.
Get involved
Community partners, artists, and formerly incarcerated voices are welcome.
