Announcing the Harry Sayle III Appellate Intensive

We are proud to celebrate the life and work of our former colleague Harry Sayle III, who spent most of his 40-year legal career in this office, where he served on our Appellate Team. We honor his decades of public service with the Harry Sayle III Appellate Intensive, which today we announced along with a proclamation in Harry’s honor from Shelby County Mayor Mickell Lowery — which we were privileged to present to Karen Dennis, Harry’s wife and our guest.

Each summer, up to five interns — the Sayle Writers — will work alongside our appellate team on a substantial piece of written advocacy. 1Ls will draft a memo of law answering a live research question from our trial or appellate attorneys; 2Ls and 3Ls will research and draft a portion of an actual appellate brief under an appellate attorney’s supervision. Sayle Writers will meet regularly with their supervising attorneys and present their findings to the full office before the internship ends.

Participants leave with a writing sample, research that serves our clients and our attorneys, and experience in both written and oral advocacy. More information on the Appellate Intensive and how to apply is available on our Internship Program page.
